 QUALIFICATIONS

Every intended parent and fertility clinic will have their own matching criteria. The basic qualifications for a surrogate are noted below.

AGE

A surrogate must be between the age of 21 and 43.  If she is 40+ her clinic and match options will be a lot more limited.

HEALTHY PREGNANCY + DELIVERY

A surrogate must have had at least one successful pregnancy and delivery without significant complications.

BMI

A surrogate must maintain a healthy BMI throughout her journey. The range is highly dependent on the fertility clinic but generally speaking it should be between 19 and 32.

LACK OF DRUG USE

Recreational drug use is not permitted during the surrogacy process.

STABLE MENTAL HEALTH

A surrogate will undergo a psychological evaluation early in the process.  She should have no major mental health conditions and must be prepared for the emotional aspects of surrogacy.

ABSENT CRIMINAL HISTORY

A clean criminal background is ideal, but the primary concerns are felony charges, recent offenses, repeat offenses and/or violent crimes.

SOLID SUPPORT SYSTEM

A strong support system is crucial for any surrogate.  That can be in the form of immediate, extended or chosen family, but should consist of individuals she can rely on during the physical and emotional challenges of surrogacy.

HEART

Surrogacy is a very personal and emotional process.  There are many factors that motivate someone to pursue surrogacy, but their primary motivation should be rooted in altruism.
